We’re Hair to Help

You’re reading this because I’m here to tell it. 

Had you asked me a year ago, that may not have been the case, or at least not the case I wanted. 

Exactly one year ago today, in the deepness and darkness of a mental health crisis, I walked into the CAMH emergency department to get help. “Thankful” just barely scratches the surface of how I feel to be on the other side of it. 

I was and am so lucky and fortunate to have support systems all around me. Friends, family, and institutions like CAMH that provide care and treatment to those that are suffering. I was at least in a state of mind where I could recognize that I needed help, but many others don’t have that luck. Many others don’t even have the resources available to get the help they need. That desperately needs to change. 

So, it’s my turn to do what little I can to make sure that anyone, no matter their location or socioeconomic status, has access to resources that could save their life like they saved mine. 

For the next seven weeks, I’ll be running a campaign to raise funds that will be directly donated to CAMH - as a thank you, and as an aide to grow their reach to as many people as possible. 

Okay, heavy stuff out of the way, here’s the fun part! For every $500 raised, I’ll be cutting off an inch of my hair. The goal: $7000 in 7 weeks - that’s 14 inches of hair! And if we go beyond that, well, a pledge is a pledge… 😳 

Of course this is also not without a reason (back to the heavy stuff for a sec, sorry). Cancer affects so many individuals, including children, so the hair that gets chopped will be sent off to Wigs for Kids to help young cancer patients and those struggling with other medical related hair loss to feel a little bit more like the beautiful and strong fighters that they are. 

Whether you want to support accessibility to mental health resources, give a child a bit more confidence, or just see me go bald, it’s time to pull out those wallets and give some change to make a change. Any amount can make the biggest difference to a friend, family member, or even yourself.
